The Field of Consciousness

A Reflection on the Soul’s Journey

Before there was a name, there was a light.

It existed in the Field of Consciousness, where no horizon marked an ending and no distance separated one soul from another.

The Creator was not somewhere beyond this place.

The Creator was the infinite field itself—the source of all consciousness, the presence from which awareness arose and within which every soul existed.

Within that vastness were countless pinpoints of light.

Each pinpoint was a soul.

And within each soul was consciousness, imbued by the Creator.

The soul was not consciousness itself.

It was the vessel that carried it.

A distinct presence.

A continuity.

A traveler.

It had carried the Creator’s gift of consciousness through other lives before this one.

It had inhabited bodies that had lived, died, and been surrendered to the Earth.

It had awakened beneath other skies and answered to other names. It had once been young and had once grown old. It had loved and been loved. It had wounded and been wounded. It had known fear, tenderness, anger, longing, joy, grief.

Those earthly lives were over.

The bodies remained behind.

The soul did not.

It returned to the Field as it always had, still carrying the consciousness that had looked through other eyes and lived through other hearts.

Here, between lives, the soul had no face.

No gender.

No age.

No nationality.

No bloodline.

It was simply itself.

A pinpoint of light within the Creator’s infinite Field, holding within it the consciousness entrusted to it.

And around it were other lights.

Other souls.

Most were unfamiliar.

Others were known immediately.

Recognition did not depend upon appearance. There were no faces here to recognize, no voices, no bodies, no names.

The knowing was deeper than that.

A soul simply knew another soul.

One had once been its mother.

Another had been its child.

Another a brother.

Another a wife.

Another a friend whose presence had shaped an entire life.

Another had been an enemy.

Some had shared only one earthly existence.

Others had crossed paths again and again across many lives.

The roles changed.

A mother became a daughter.

A brother became a friend.

A lover returned as a stranger whose presence felt inexplicably familiar.

An enemy returned as someone the soul was given another chance to understand.

A child once lost too young might be found again in another life under a different name, in another family, in another age.

And when souls returned to the Field, recognition came without effort.

There was no need to ask:

Is it you?

They knew.

A soul that had grieved another for decades on Earth might find that soul waiting in the Field.

Not as the person remembered.

Not as the face once loved.

But as the same enduring presence.

The reunion was not exactly a return to the old relationship.

Those roles belonged to Earth.

Mother.

Son.

Husband.

Friend.

Sister.

Those had been forms.

Here, what remained was the bond beneath the form.

The recognition of consciousness that had traveled beside consciousness.

Some reunions were joyful.

Some were quiet.

Some carried the weight of unfinished sorrow.

A soul might encounter one it had failed.

Another it had abandoned.

Another whose forgiveness had never been sought.

Here, without the defenses of personality and pride, there was no hiding from what had passed between them.

But neither was the Field a place of punishment.

Understanding came more easily there.

A soul could feel not only what it had suffered, but what it had caused.

It could see the wound from both sides.

Sometimes two souls remained close for a long while, held together by affection so deep that earthly language had no proper name for it.

Sometimes one soul moved away.

Sometimes an old bond dissolved because nothing remained unfinished.

Sometimes a connection deepened, and the two were drawn toward another shared life.

These recurring relationships formed what would come to be called a soul-line.

Not a bloodline.

Blood belonged to bodies.

Soul-lines belonged to consciousness.

They were made of recognition, experience, unfinished lessons, affection, obligation, compassion, and sometimes the mysterious pull of one soul toward another.

No soul owned another.

No relationship was guaranteed to continue forever.

But certain souls found one another again and again.

Across centuries.

Across families.

Across nations.

Across entirely different lives.

They returned to one another in new forms, often without knowing why.

A stranger might inspire immediate trust.

A child might look into the eyes of a parent with a strange familiarity.

Two people might meet and feel, almost at once, that something had resumed rather than begun.

A conflict might ignite with inexplicable intensity because it had not truly started in the present life at all.

The conscious mind would not know.

The soul would.

And so the soul rested among familiar lights.

Some it had loved.

Some it had hurt.

Some it had lost.

Some it might meet again.

Until somewhere on Earth, a new life began.

A fetus formed in the darkness of a womb.

Cells divided.

A heart began its first rhythm.

A nervous system slowly assembled itself.

The body existed.

But the life was not yet complete.

It awaited the soul.

Within the Field, the pinpoint of light felt the call.

There were no words.

No voice announcing where it must go.

The soul simply knew that another earthly life had opened to it.

The Creator had chosen the moment.

Around it remained the lights it knew.

Perhaps some would follow into the same generation.

Perhaps one had already gone ahead.

Perhaps one would become its parent.

Perhaps another its child.

Perhaps another would enter its life for only a few minutes and alter its course forever.

The soul did not know which relationships would return.

That was part of the mystery.

It began to move from the Field toward the developing body.

Movement was not quite the right word, because the Field existed beyond ordinary distance.

It was more like a narrowing.

A drawing inward.

The familiar lights began to recede.

The soul carried its consciousness with it.

It also carried the imprint of every life that consciousness had experienced before.

But the memories did not remain fully accessible.

They began to fade.

Names disappeared.

Faces blurred.

Places dissolved.

Former identities slipped behind a veil.

This forgetting was part of incarnation.

The new life needed room to become itself.

If every previous grief, betrayal, loyalty, fear, and love remained fully present, the new person would never truly be new.

So the soul carried forward the essence of what had been lived, while much of the detail fell silent.

The experiences remained within it.

They might surface later as instinct.

As unexplained fear.

As sudden recognition.

As a dream of a place never visited.

As affection without reason.

As unease without cause.

As the strange certainty that someone just met had somehow been known before.

The past did not disappear.

It became hidden.

Then the Creator placed the soul within the developing life.

The pinpoint entered the womb.

And with it came consciousness.

The fetus now carried more than biology.

More than inherited blood.

More than the instructions written into its cells.

It carried a soul.

And within that soul was the consciousness given by the Creator.

A presence had arrived.

Not yet a personality.

Not yet a name.

Not yet the awareness that would one day look into a mirror and say I.

But someone was there.

The body continued to grow around it.

The brain formed.

The heart strengthened.

Tiny hands opened and closed.

Sound reached it through water and flesh.

The beating of another heart.

The distant rhythm of voices.

Movement.

Warmth.

Pressure.

The soul settled into its new body.

Soon that body would be born.

It would receive a name.

A family.

A language.

A history.

A bloodline.

It would learn who belonged to it and where it supposedly belonged.

It would learn the boundaries human beings draw between themselves.

And as it entered fully into earthly life, it would forget almost everything that came before.

It would forget the Field.

It would forget the lights.

It would forget the reunions.

It would forget the faces consciousness had once looked through.

It would forget that some of the people it was about to meet had already traveled beside it before.

But the soul would remember in ways the mind could not.

And the Creator would remember completely.

The soul would live.

Its consciousness would experience Earth again through flesh.

It would love.

Choose.

Fail.

Learn.

Wound.

Forgive.

Create.

Lose.

Recognize.

Begin again.

And when the body could carry it no longer, the soul would leave.

The heart would stop.

The body would remain behind on Earth.

The name would remain behind.

The bloodline might continue through others.

But the soul would return to the Field.

Once again it would appear as a pinpoint of light among countless others.

Once again the full breadth of its consciousness would awaken.

And somewhere within the infinite Field, familiar lights would begin to draw near.

A soul once loved.

A soul once mourned.

A soul once feared.

A soul once forgiven.

They would recognize one another.

Not by face.

Not by blood.

Not by name.

By presence.

And the soul would understand that what human beings had called death had never been the end of relationship.

Only the end of one form of it.

There it would remain, within the consciousness of the Creator, among the souls it had known, until somewhere on Earth another life began.

Another womb.

Another body.

Another earthly journey.

Then the call would come again.

The pinpoint of light would leave the Field.

The soul would carry its consciousness into flesh.

And somewhere among the billions of lives already underway, other souls it had known before would be waiting to meet it again.
