Are We Having a Waldorf Moment?

Cultivating Curiosity in the Age of AI


The future will not belong to the child who can memorize the most.

AI has already won that contest.

Machines can summarize, calculate, organize, compare, draft, and explain. They are becoming very good at the tasks schools have traditionally rewarded.

So the more urgent question is this:

What remains human?

Aravind Srinivas, CEO and co-founder of Perplexity, has argued that success in the AI age will depend not only on technical skill but on curiosity, judgment, and the ability to ask better questions. Perplexity’s mission, he has said, is “to serve the world’s curiosity.”

That phrase should stop every parent and teacher in their tracks.

Because if curiosity is becoming one of the most important human skills, are our schools cultivating it—or quietly extinguishing it?

For decades, education has been organized around answers. Correct answers. Standardized answers. Answers that can be scored, ranked, and reported.

But when answers become abundant, information is no longer the rare thing.

The rare thing is hunger.

The child who still wonders.

The child who asks why.

The child who notices the beetle on the sidewalk, the sadness in a story, the rhythm in a poem, or the moral problem inside a machine.

That child is not behind.

That child may be the future.

This is where Waldorf education suddenly feels newly relevant.

Waldorf was built around a different understanding of the child—not as a data processor or future employee, but as a whole human being.

Head, heart, and hands.

Thinking, feeling, and doing.

Its classrooms bring together academics, storytelling, movement, music, art, nature, and practical work. Children are encouraged to paint, build, garden, sing, imagine, observe, and make things with their hands.

In the old world, that could sound quaint.

In the AI world, it sounds radical.

The danger now is not that children will lack information.

The danger is that they will lose the desire to seek it.

They may become prompt-dependent before they become question-rich. They may learn to outsource thought before they have developed the judgment to evaluate what comes back.

AI can explain a tree.

But it cannot replace climbing one.

It can generate a poem.

But it cannot replace the inner life from which a real poem begins.

It can imitate imagination.

But it cannot form the human being who imagines.

Curiosity grows through contact with the real world.

A forest that does not explain itself.

A musical instrument that resists the beginner.

A block of wood that must be shaped by hand.

A story that leaves something unresolved.

These encounters teach children that the world is not simply a collection of facts waiting to be retrieved. It is mysterious. It pushes back. It asks something of them.

That is why curiosity matters.

Curiosity is not a cute personality trait. It is the force that drives exploration, learning, and discovery.

And if AI becomes the great accelerator of knowledge, curiosity will be the steering wheel.

Without curiosity, AI becomes shortcut, dependency, entertainment, and noise.

With curiosity, it becomes telescope, microscope, library, studio, and compass.

The question is not whether children should eventually use AI.

They will.

The question is whether they will arrive at it with a living inner world.

Will they bring experience?

Judgment?

Imagination?

Will they know the difference between a fast answer and a deep one?

This is where Waldorf has something important to offer.

As many public schools rush to integrate AI into classrooms, often before children have fully developed attention, judgment, imagination, and independent thought, Waldorf offers a necessary counterbalance.

It asks a question mainstream education may be moving too quickly to avoid:

Before we teach children how to use artificial intelligence, have we given them enough time to develop their own?

Before the screen, the hand.

Before abstraction, experience.

Before information, relationship.

Before speed, rhythm.

Before the child is asked to master the machine, the child must first be allowed to encounter the world.

We do not need schools that merely ban technology.

Fear is not a curriculum.

We need schools that prepare children to use technology without being swallowed by it.

Children who can paint, sing, build, garden, debate, write, repair, observe, imagine, and sit with the discomfort of not knowing.

Children who do not confuse information with wisdom.

Children who understand that intelligence is not only computational. It lives in the fingertips, the senses, the conscience, and the imagination.

That is why AI will not make Waldorf education obsolete.

It will make it essential.

The future does not need children trained to compete with machines at machine tasks.

The future needs children who are more alive than the machines.

More curious.

More courageous.

More awake.

Perhaps we are having a Waldorf moment because the rest of education is finally being forced to remember what Waldorf, at its best, never forgot:

A child is not an answer machine.

A child is a flame.

And the purpose of education is not to fill that flame with data.
